Pre & Post Sugaring Care

We all know by now that sugaring for hair removal is less painful than waxing and doesn't leave the razor burn and stubble growth that usually goes along with shaving.  Sugaring only removes dead skin cells unlike wax that removes live skin cells.  During sugaring treatments, the hairs are removed in the natural growth direction and the sugar paste doesn't stick so harshly to the skin, therefore, there is much less skin and follicle irritation and redness.  However, those hairs are still being pulled out by the roots, so we would be misleading you if we said there was absolutely no irritation afterwards.  We do have some tips and tricks for minimizing those after-effects, and keep your skin happy after your sugaring hair removal.

Hair growth needs to be only 1/4" to be removed.

We advise that you not time your appointment to coincide with your menstrual cycle as it is a time when you are most sensitive.

Exfoliation should not be done the day prior to, the day of. or for three days aftter treatment sine this can cause skin irritation.

You can also apply numb-it a fast acting topical gel that takes the sting out of the hair removal.

Take Home To Use:

Soothing Oil:  Apply Soothing Healing Oil daily to help the skin stay hydrated and conditioned.  This can be used immediately after treatiment.

AHA's have the smallest molecule to penetrate the top layer of skin. May use daily on any area of the body in need of exfoliation.  Perfect for those prone to ingrown hairs. Great for active skin too.  Can be used 2-3 days after treatment.

Sweet Exfoliator™  Toner Pads:  AHA/ BHA exfoliating treatment pad containing Aspen Bark Extract, a natural salicylic acid. Can be used for face or body. Numb IT Topical Anesthetic:  Apply Numb IT anywhere hair removal is performed.  These areas should numb in approximately 20 minutes.  The results last up to 45 minutes.  You can also reapply product if necessary.  ONE DROP spreads about 2 inches and goes a long way.

These products are available for purchase in the studio.

Avoid Hot Tubs and swimming pools for 3 days following Treatment.  The pores of the skin are more open and there is a greater chance of bacterial infection.  Showering/bathing is okay.

Skin Spotting:  Tiny red spots may appear on the skin for a few ours or even a day or so in some cases. If this should happen, do not be alarmed.  This is just an indication that the hairs have been removed from the follicle and it is quite normal after a treatment  They will disappear.

Exercising:  It is best not to exercise the day of hair removal.  If large areas (i.e., back, chest, stomach) are sugared you should wait for 3 days to exercise.  Exercise increases sweating/perspiration and increases the chance of break outs.

What to wear:  It is best to wear loose cotton clothing after receiving a sugaring treatment.

Sensitive Skin:  To take away the sting and to reduce redness, apply an ice cold compress to the are three times for about 2-3 minutes at a time.  Do not use perfumed soap or products with chemical irritants on treated area within 24 hours of your treatment.

Face:  To quickly reduce any redness to the area, wrap an ice cube in a wet cloth and apply it to the treated area 5 to 6 times at one hour intervals.  You may develop some whiteheads in this area but they seldom appear with subsequent treatments.

Beware of Sun Exposure:  After  your treatment, your skin may sunburn more easily.  Avoid exposing your skin to the sun and any infra-red lamp or solarium for a minimum of three days.  You should not receive a treatment if your skin is sunburned.

Was it Painful?  Do not base your first time sugaring for future treatments.  If you have been shaving, the first treatment is the worst, due to the fact that the bulb at the base of the hair shaft is enlarged.  The more treatments you receive, the weaker the roots get and the easier it is to remove the hair.  Due to the way hair grows, it will take a few months to replace the shaven hair with a natural hair growth.

Ingrown Hairs:  Many people are subject to in-gorown hairs due to the hair being out of the follicle for weeks giving the dead skin cells a chance to form over the mouth of the follicle, thus causing the hair to grow under the skin when iit reappears.  To prevent this from happening you should soak 3 times per week in lukewarm water with a 1/2 cp of dead sea salts for 10 minutes.  Exfoliate for a few more minutes.  Be sure to re-hydrate your skin afterwards with body lotion.  Ask for suggestions to suit your personal requirements.

Your Next Appointment:  The best results occur when you establish a routine suitable to your hair growth  Since diminishment of hair growth is a gradual process and is achieved by regular treatments over a period of time, the usual time span between appointments is 4-6 weeks.  It is important to note that due to the changes that may occur in your hormonal balance from time to time, you may have unusually heavy growth perhaps once a year.  This is quite normal.  Keep in mind that the dimishment of hair growth will occur gradually, despite the occasional heavy growth and this doesn't mean that the treatment isn't working or that your hair growth is being stimulated.  Usually hair diminishes the most within 18-24 months.

Please do not use a razor or depilatory creams between appointments.

To ensure maximum comfort and benefit after the treatment, it is important to follow the steps below at home:

  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting garments immediately following treatment.
  • Avoid applying heat to the sugared area for 12 to 24 hours.  This includes strenuous exercise, hot baths, sauna, and steam.
  • Avoid sun tanning for 24 hours. This includes any strong ultraviolet (UV) light exposure or tanning bed treatments.
  • Avoid applying highly fragranced products to the sugared area up to 12 hours. This includes, perfume, scented body lotions, antiperspirant, cosmetics, or feminine hygiene sprays. Use professional products, recommended to you.
  • Avoid using harsh abrasives or exfoliates in the sugared area for 24 hours. It is then recommended to exfoliate and apply hydrating creams or lotions to the area to further lessen the chances of in-grown hairs.
  • Avoid applying high SPF sunblocks to the sugared area for 12–24 hours after the sugaring service. Sunscreen chemicals can be irritating to the newly sugared skin. This includes self-tanning products and tan accelerators.
  • Any pinking of the skin should disappear within 6 to 8 hours after the sugaring treatment. Slight pinking is normal, and indicates that the hair was removed from the root, rather than superficially broken off, as in shaving. This is the reason that professional sugaring lasts so much longer.

Last, and certainly not least, to reduce inner stress, treat yourself to chocolate and your favorite wine or champagne the day after your appointment.  After all, it can be hard work being beautiful and you should allow time to “recover” And don’t forget to set your next appointment 4-6 weeks out.
